3 Myths About Divorce
Most people never anticipate the possibility of divorce. Perhaps that's why this common legal procedure remains so poorly understood. In the United States, the rate of divorce is about half that of the marriage rate, yet most people continue to hold a number of misconceptions about the procedure, its usual causes, and its likely consequences. Some of the most common myths surrounding divorce include:
Most divorces are caused by quarrels over money.
A recent study found that arguments over family finances did play a role in the escalation of marriage problems, but that those issues were not a decisive factor in the decision to have a divorce. On average, money ranks behind abuse, lack of emotional support, incompatibility, and sexual problems. In most cases, divorce happens because of problems that are ultimately irreconcilable.
Divorces are usually initiated by men.
In reality, about two-thirds of all divorces today are commenced by women. In part, these seems to be intertwined with the realities of divorce law. In most states, women are more likely than men to receive custody of their children. This means that women will be less deterred by the prospect of losing their children.
Having a child reduces your chances of divorce.
The period following the birth of a first child is actually the most stress-filled period of most marriages. Bringing a child into an already unhappy situation may put additional tension on the two spouses and make an eventual divorce more polarizing and difficult. Couples should have children because they sincerely want to, not as part of a misguided attempt to “save” their marriage.
